Holiday Message 2024

As we bring the 2024 season of learning to a close, we’ve been reflecting on the heart of our mission and the values we embody — collaboration, curiosity, quality and humility.

UBC CPD’s core community of team members, learners, partners and subject matter experts keep us thriving and allow us to enhance our standard of education delivery every year.

“Our values reinforce the UBC CPD vision to provide optimal health for everyone through continuing professional development,” says Jackie Howard, Director, UBC CPD. “By working collectively to design and deliver exceptional learning opportunities for health professionals, we’re able to bring this vision to life.”

Achieving our vision through strong and supportive collaboration

In 2024, UBC CPD collaborated with several partners to launch new initiatives, including team-based care workshops with the Vancouver Division of Family Practice, an eLearning module with the Contraception & Abortion Research Team (CART), a provincial awareness campaign and training with the BC Ministry of Health and BC Provincial Health Services Authority, and more.

“Our partners are at the heart of our work. We welcome new collaborations in the year ahead,” says Howard.

Working through an ever-changing learning environment with curiosity

In August, we welcomed Research Associate Dr. Adam Gavarkovs to lead the development of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program of research and advance our research goals. Since then, we’ve established a CPD Scholarly Interest Group, open to all UBC faculty and staff interested in conducting or applying CPD research findings to their own educational practice.

UBC CPD presented numerous research initiatives at the annual CHES Celebration of Scholarship in October, addressing decolonial principles in medical education, mental health and wellbeing, and identifying support systems for health professionals. Learn more about our research projects.

Creating education grounded in quality improvement and best practices

We created and launched novel and brand-new education this year, including:

Our most highly attended webinar of the year, Implementing HPV-Based Cervical Cancer Screening in BC: Early Outcomes and Answering Your Questions, wrapped up our two-part series as a continuation of implementing new guidelines in Cervix Screening in BC: Transitioning from Cytology (Pap Test) to HPV Primary Screening in 2023.

Health misinformation continues to thrive. To support health professionals and patients as they navigate the reliability of health information resources, we hosted the webinar, Supporting Patients and Providers in a Sea of Health Misinformation in June.

In February, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) recognized UBC CPD as the top provider of accredited CPD in the country with 289 approved programs. We’re honoured to receive the 2024 CFPC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program award for providing exceptional learning experiences through the British Columbia Physician Integration Program (BC-PIP).

To advance coaching and mentoring in the health-care system, we’re also launching a new information and education session in January and a new matching tool to integrate more technology and improve user experience for our award-winning Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP).

Supporting reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and Nations and advancing anti-racism with humility

UBC CPD recognizes the responsibility to support reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and Nations, advance anti-racism and improve the experiences of Indigenous peoples when interacting with the health-care system.

In 2024, we reinforced our dedication to meet provincial regulations and the Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility and Anti-racism practice standard and follow this standard in our workshops, Nawh Whu’nus’en: We See in Two Worlds - Trauma-Sensitive Practice Curriculum.

Working with the Indigenous Specific Anti-Racism (ISAR) and Cultural Safety Team, we aim to launch interactive, live webinars that address Indigenous specific anti-racism and cultural safety topics in 2025.

Charting a path forward in 2025

UBC CPD is looking ahead to the future of programming and strengthening relationships in the heart of our community: team members, learners, partners and subject matter experts.

In the new year, we’re excited to host the Women’s Health Update and UBC Whistler Orthopeadic Summit with re-imagined agendas. Our brand-new BC-PIP Physician Wellness Podcast series will also kick off a new form of peer-led education through a unique audio experience.

“Thank you for collaborating and learning with us this year. From everyone at UBC CPD, we wish you a heartfelt, healthy and restful holiday season and welcome opportunities to connect in 2025,” says Howard.
