The St. Paul’s Hospital Regional Anesthesia Observership Day is an intensive program meant to maximize your exposure to regional nerve block techniques on patients scheduled for the operating room. St. Paul’s performs a high volume of both upper and lower extremity orthopedic, plastic, and vascular surgery under regional nerve block anesthesia. Nerve block procedures will be observed in a small group format as they are performed by a Regional Anesthesiologist & Anesthesia Assistant; a Regional Anesthesia Fellow and a Senior Resident are typically performing the procedures as well. The observership is combined with discussions and didactic lectures by two regional anesthesiologists to cover topics relevant to your practice.

The following is a summary of the most commonly used block techniques that will be observed or discussed during the program:

  • Upper extremity / brachial plexus blocks commonly used include:

* Interscalene (single shot and continuous catheter)

* Supraclavicular

* Infraclavicular (single shot and continuous catheter)

* Axillary

* Distal selective nerve blocks (median, radial, ulnar)

  • Lower extremity blocks commonly used include:

* Popliteal sciatic (single shot and continuous catheter)

* Saphenous (adductor canal approach and sub-sartorial approach)

* Distal selective nerve blocks (ankle blocks)

  • Thoracic epidural insertion
  • Neuraxial ultrasound
  • Ultrasound-guided intravenous access

This program is accredited for 7.5 Mainpro+ credits.
