Target Audience:

Family physicians, specialists, IMGs, midwives, physical therapists, occupational therapists, residents/students, nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers.

Course Format: Interactive 8.0-hour in-person workshop (including lunch and breaks), 0.5 hour coaching call, and pre/post-workshop activities.

Effective communication between physicians, patients, colleagues and staff has been proven to enhance our healthcare system, improve outcomes and lead to better patient and healthcare practitioner satisfaction. The Optimizing Communication for Excel ence course begins with a one-day workshop, in which participants learn a simple 4-stage framework to navigate difficult conversations. After the workshop, you’ll benefit from a 30-minute personalized coaching call included as part of the course. To support your ongoing learning and practice, you’ll have opportunities to share with peers and program facilitators your insights, successes and challenges in a safe and positive environment. Discover new approaches to speaking with patients and colleagues.

Skills Gained

Upon completion of this professional development program, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply an evidence-based model to enhance communication-skills for healthcare providers. 
  2. Recognize common challenging communication patterns that can arise in healthcare-related environments and relationships.
  3. Identify and apply the qualities of a learning conversation for the purpose of effective communication with patients and colleagues.
  4. Practice applying a structured communication approach to clinically relevant scenarios and cases, utilizing peer and facilitator feedback.
  5. Identify and commit to incorporating newly-honed communication skills in one’s own professional environment for the purpose of improved patient and physician/self-satisfaction. 


Registration is limited to 20 participants per workshop. Cost of workshop will include all course materials, full-day workshop and half-hour coaching call (approx. 6-weeks post-workshop).
