This one-day conference covers the following topics:

  • Ethics, liability, communication and professionalism
  • Cultural considerations of communicating with patients in Canada
  • Introduction to indigenous health
  • ​Physician self-care and resilience

Skills Gained

Upon completion of the orientation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify features of medical practice unique to British Columbia (BC) and Canada, including issues related to culture and diversity
  • Identify and access clinical and educational resources and supports (local, provincial and national), including those related to ethical and/or medico-legal questions or concerns
  • Recognize how one’s own cultural beliefs and attitudes impact relationships with patients
  • Discuss the determinants affecting health status of Indigenous people
  • Consider how trauma-informed practice may help improve care provision for Indigenous patients in BC
  • Review practices that can promote resilience and wellbeing for health care providers
  • Recognize the signs, symptoms, and causal factors of physician burnout
  • Create a personalized physician burnout prevention plan

Cost

Free: The Joint Collaborative Committees (JCCs), a partnership of the Ministry of Health and Doctors of BC, has generously approved funding to cover tuition fees for provisionally licensed BC-PIP participants to attend the IMG Orientation Conference from April 13, 2019 through March 31, 2022.
