Residents and New-to-Practice Workshops

What are the Residents and New-to-Practice Workshops?

These workshops are designed to support residents and new-to-practice family physicians in their transition to practice by providing information on key resources and tools for managing the first years of practice.

Workshops will include presentations on key recommendations and practical resources in addition to opportunities for networking and informal mentoring.

Who should attend?

These workshops are designed for Vancouver Division of Family Practice resident and family physician members who are new to practice (0-5 years). Non-members who are family physicians and residents that deliver the majority of their services in Vancouver are welcome to attend the event and apply for Vancouver Division of Family Practice membership online  https://www.divisionsbc.ca/vancouver/becomingamember

What will I learn?

Vancouver family physicians are eligible to participate in this initiative by attending one, some, or all of Residents and New-to-Practice workshops, whose content covers:

  1. Help My Help Myself! Managing your First Year(s) in Practice
  2. Help My Help My Patients! Accessing the Services your Patients Need in Vancouver
  3. Help Me Fill This Out! Completing Patient Forms

At the end of the workshop(s), participants will be able to:

Help My Help Myself

  1. Critically evaluate locum opportunities to make informed employment decisions
  2. Distinguish between different funding models (e.g. Fee-for-service, population-based funding etc.), the advantages and disadvantages associated with each, and associated billing practices
  3. Describe the basic principles of negotiation and the importance of a contract for locum work
  4. Cultivate a sense of community and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange through networking with fellow residents and new-to-practice graduates

  1. Identify and recommend available health care resources, as well as income and housing services, with the goal of improved patient access and care
  2. Access and utilize Vancouver Division of Family Practice resources and tools with the goal of improved patient care
  3. Cultivate a sense of community through information sharing and networking with fellow residents and new-to-practice family physicians in Vancouver

  1. Access and utilize Vancouver Division of Family Practice resources and tools with the goal of improved patient care
