This November, the UBC CPD-run British Columbia Physician Integration Program (BC-PIP) received the CFPC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program Award in recognition of providing exceptional learning experiences to practicing or practice-eligible CFPC members.
The Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) honoured the program at the 2024 CFPC Family Medicine Forum (FMF), where commitment to education, research and excellence in the practice of family medicine was celebrated.
“We are extremely grateful for all the support BC-PIP has received since its inception and for this recognition from CFPC. It has truly been a privilege for our team to support newly licensed, internationally trained colleagues integrating into our health-care system,” says Dr. Steven Yau, UBC CPD Medical Director, IMG Programs
Supporting the journey to practice medicine in BC
The Mainpro+ certified British Columbia Physician Integration Program (BC-PIP) supports the transition of practice-eligible international medical graduates (IMGs) from the provisional registry to full licensure to practice medicine in BC.
“I have learned new things about the Canadian system, resources available, professionalism, I feel more empowered to offer good care to my patients,” says a past participant.
Championing IMG’s journey to integration in Canada’s health-care system, the program hosts orientation through a one-day conference and six online modules.
A past program participant says "...it was a great introduction to working in BC and a good variety of topics covered. It's a lot to take in but it's great to connect with other IMGs and knowing that you're not alone starting out work here in BC!”
To enroll in the IMG Orientation Conference, participants must be registered in the provisional class with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.
Looking ahead
"Looking ahead, we at UBC CPD will continue to strive to provide innovative and exceptional learning opportunities for health professionals that enhance care, address emerging health needs, and optimize health outcomes for everyone," says Dr. Yau.
Charlotte Humphries, UBC CPD Program Manager, provides insight on a new initiative for the British Columbia Physician Integration Program (BC-PIP).
"We’re excited to share what’s next for BC-PIP. UBC CPD is developing a new podcast series to promote a culture of wellness among IMG physicians. Featuring stories from past BC-PIP participants, the series aims to destigmatize conversations around physician wellness and inspire listeners to reflect on their own well-being. Stay tuned for the launch in 2025!"
