Name: Nicole Moon

Title: Project Manager

Portfolio: Rural CPD

Describe what you do and what programs you work on:

As a Project Manager in the Rural CPD portfolio, I have had the pleasure of providing management and oversight for several programs, including the Hands-On Ultrasound Education (HOUSE) course, Real-Time Virtual Support (RTVS) Simulation program and a variety of educational rounds series.

Which partners do you work with most closely?

The UBC Rural CPD team works in close partnership with the Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCbc) to create and sustain educational offerings that are tailored to the needs of rural, remote and Indigenous communities across British Columbia. Our work is funded by the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues.

Who does your work impact?

Each community in British Columbia has unique learning goals — our work at UBC Rural CPD seeks to understand those goals and deliver education in low-barrier ways. Our work helps bridge gaps in access to education to improve care and directly impact the lives of diverse patient populations.

In what ways does this work impact the health community, health-care system or wellbeing of the target audience?

When rural health professionals are informed and supported in their professional development journeys, the system and patients benefit. I am particularly inspired by Rural CPD’s commitment to longitudinal relationships with our learners. A rural family medicine resident, for example, may have the opportunity to participate in one of our Rural Rounds webinars or complete our Hands-On Ultrasound Education (HOUSE) course early on in their medical career. As they enter practice, they might engage with our Personal Learning Plans (PLP) program to develop a plan centered to their individual goals or further develop specific skills through our Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP).

What do you think are the new opportunities (trends) affecting your work?

Some of the most exciting opportunities developing in our work today involve the use of technology at the point-of-care to inform clinical decision making. Point-of care ultrasound allows care providers to reduce imaging wait times and unnecessary patient transfers. Our Real-Time Virtual Support Simulation (RTVS) program also provides opportunities for health professionals to call a colleague during simulated clinical cases so that they might feel more comfortable using real RTVS peer pathways during a patient encounter. These opportunities hold great promise to boost clinical confidence and reduce barriers for high quality patient care in British Columbia.
