Meet: Katherine Co
Title: Interactive Designer
Portfolio: Creative Learning
Describe what you do and what programs you work on:
As an Interactive Designer on the Creative Learning team at UBC Continuing Professional Development (CPD), I translate complex content into engaging, accessible and meaningful learning experiences for busy health professionals.
I collaborate with learning and curriculum managers, subject matter experts and people with lived experience to bring design thinking, visual storytelling and interactivity into our educational programs.
Recent projects I’ve worked on include Dignity and Access: Family Planning Care for People Experiencing Incarceration, an online course offered in English and French, designed to support respectful, compassionate and equitable care for people who are incarcerated. I also contributed to Alhgoh Together as One, Together as Community: Pathway to Indigenous Cultural Safety, which supports growth in Indigenous cultural safety, humility and anti‑racism in clinical practice.
In addition, I support internationally trained physicians by maintaining and continuing the evolution of the PRA‑BC Virtual Hub and the BC Physician Integration Program (BC‑PIP) online hubs.
Which partners do you work with most closely?
I work closely with a range of provincial and national partners, including the Contraception and Abortion Research Team (CART), BC Ministry of Health, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU).
I also collaborate with people who bring lived experience and cultural expertise.
Who does your work impact?
My work supports health professionals, including family physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners, nurses and pharmacists, as well as physicians trained outside of Canada who are integrating into the BC health‑care system.
In what ways does this work impact the health community, health-care system, or well-being of the target audience?
I help create education that emphasizes empathy, dignity and cultural safety, bringing real clinical context to our case studies and illustrations.
Because our courses are self ‑paced, the Creative Learning team prioritizes providing learners with intuitive, practical, and accessible tools and resources. A key value of ours is our learners’ time and we are motivated to make education easier to apply in practice.
What do you think are the new opportunities (trends) affecting your work?
Medical guidelines and best practices are constantly evolving. As an Interactive Designer, I focus on building courses that are flexible and up to date.
This approach creates space to deepen our work in web interactivity and inclusivity — allowing us to refine learning experiences that are reliable and easy to use, while continuing to meet the changing needs of health professionals.
