Resident Match Day marks an exciting milestone in a medical student’s professional career, and with it, the new challenge of preparing for residency.
On March 4, 2025, the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) shared results to pair final-year medical students with residency programs across Canada. To support students and program site leads, we continue to provide CPD opportunities that inspire learners from residency throughout the rest of their careers.
Get an insider perspective from UBC residents
As first-year residents start to ask questions, now is the perfect time to delve into resources that connect medical professionals at all levels.
In collaboration with UBC Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), the UBC Resident Insider project was launched in 2024 to assist residents in the first few months of their program. Current UBC residents share practical advice about clinical practice, tips on personal wellbeing and a checklist to pace out tasks between Match Day and the first day of your program.
UBC CPD Interactive Designer, Katherine Co and UBC Family Medicine resident, Dr. Kim Co developed the project to address challenges and uncertainty that come with being a resident in British Columbia (BC).
Dr. Co shares, "We initially created an IMG Residents Onboarding Guide as a prototype to the UBC Resident Insider. Because it was so useful, we shared the tool amongst residents and non-residents alike!"
"With knowledge sharing between peers at the forefront of this project, we're excited for this ever-growing library to continue providing up-to-date advice and insight for future residents," says Kat Co.

Support new residents through peer coaching
In 2024, we launched an online Peer-2-Peer Resident Coaching Portal for lead resident physicians, resident site directors, program coordinators, clinical faculty and rotation supervisors to create coaching programs at their residency sites. Peer-to-peer coaching is proven to improve clinical skills and mental health of physician residents.
Built in close collaboration with former UBC Family Medicine resident lead and UBC CPD Educational Research Grant recipient, Dr. Robin Craven, the portal connects residents with program leads and site directors.
Through resources and a discussion forum, residents can organize and use sessions to:
- Set up a resident orientation that supports peer coaching.
- Practice different methods of presenting to a preceptor.
- Set rotation goals in One45.
- Support tracking goals in T-res.
“By teaching each other, [residents] learn more and consolidate their learning... [and] by setting learning goals together, they create a framework for support and coaching that will endure throughout their careers,” says Dr. Craven.
