Nurse Practitioner CPD

Needs Assessment of Nurse Practitioners in British Columbia

We are informing you about a research study titled ‘Needs Assessment of Nurse Practitioners in British Columbia’, led by Principal Investigator Brenna Lynn, Associate Dean, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) at the University of British Columbia.

UBC Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) is launching a Nurse Practitioners CPD Program in partnership with Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of British Columbia (NNPBC) to support the continuing education needs of BC’s nurse practitioners. To help us identify priority areas for educational development, we would like to know more about your interest in CPD and the types of programming that you want to see.

Nurse practitioners currently practicing (part-time or full-time) in British Columbia are being invited to participate in this research study.

This study involves two phases. You can choose to just complete the survey or the survey and a focus group:

Phase 1: 15-minute Online Survey

Participation involves completing an online survey about your CPD experiences and preferences. You will have the opportunity to enter into a draw for one of four $100 Everything gift cards upon completion of the survey.

Learn more and participate in the survey

The survey will close on Nov. 16, 2025.

Phase 2: 60-90-minute Virtual Focus Group

Participation involves completing a focus group with other nurse practitioners facilitated by a member of the research team. Participation is optional; you can choose just to complete the survey. Questions will focus on your CPD needs and preferences, both as an independent practitioner and as a member of a health-care team. More detailed information about the focus groups can be found in the study consent form included at the end of the survey. You will receive an honorarium of $122 for participating in a focus group.

Thank you for considering this study. If you have any questions, please reach out to us as @email

About the study

What is the purpose of this study?

We are conducting this survey to learn more about nurse practitioners' interest in continuing professional development (CPD) and the types of educational programming they want to participate in. The results of the survey will inform the activities offered in the UBC Nurse Practitioners CPD program delivered by UBC CPD, in partnership with the NNPBC.

Who is conducting this study?

This survey is being conducted by researchers at UBC CPD and is financially supported by the NNPBC.

What will happen during this study?

If you decide to participate then you will be asked to complete a survey starting on the next page of this form. The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete. You can choose not to answer questions if you wish. This study also involves optional 60–90-minute focus groups with nurse practitioners, which you can indicate your interest for at the end of the study.

What are the potential risks of participating?

Your survey responses are completely anonymous unless you choose to provide your name and email at the end of the survey to (a) request a copy of the survey results, (b) enter into a draw for a gift card, or (c) express interest in the second phase of this research project (Phase 2 - Focus Groups). There is a small possibility of harm from loss of confidentiality, such as if your name, email, and survey responses are accidentally disclosed to someone outside of the study team. However, our team has taken steps to mitigate this possibility by storing data on a secure server that is only accessible to study team members.

What are the potential benefits of participating?

You will likely see no immediate benefit from completing the survey. The results of the survey will inform the development of CPD activities for nurse practitioners in British Columbia, which you may benefit from in the future.

What measures are in place to maintain my privacy?

All survey data will be stored on a secure UBC server in a folder that only study team members will have access to. Your survey responses will be stored separately from your name and email, should you choose to provide this information.

What happens if I decide to withdraw my consent?

You may decide not to complete the survey or start the survey and change your mind. You may refuse to answer any question you do not want to answer. If you do not provide your name and email, we cannot remove your data as it will not be linked back to you. If you do not provide your name and email, you can withdraw from the study by exiting the survey window at any time, without submitting your responses.  If you choose to provide your name and email and then decide later that you do not want to participate, your data will be removed as long as you indicate your desire before the study is submitted for publication.

Will I be paid for participating in this study?

At the end of the survey you will be given the option to enter into a draw for one of four Everything $100 gift cards. You do not have to respond to every question to enter into the draw and you will still be entered even if you later withdraw from the study.

How will the results of this study be communicated?

The results of this survey will be used for continuing quality improvement at UBC CPD and NNPBC, presented at conferences, and published in peer-reviewed journals. A summary of survey results will be made available to participants who indicate a desire for it at the end of the survey.
