Advancing CPD through clinical practice data: HDC Academy
Overview
To improve practice and patient care, health professionals in British Columbia (BC) require access to tools with accurate data and shared clinical experiences.
In response to the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s (CFPC) updated program and member requirements in December 2024, UBC CPD has partnered with the Health Data Coalition (HDC) to develop a CPD solution built on HDC Discover, HDC’s web-based application, that provides learners with new ways to engage in data-enabled practice reflection.
In 2026, UBC CPD and HDC launched HDC Academy, a new educational platform with self-directed learning opportunities that integrate directly with HDC Discover.
A powerful data analysis tool
HDC Discover gives family physicians and nurse practitioners across BC secure access to aggregated clinical data, while protecting patient and provider confidentiality. HDC supports health professionals as they engage with their practice data, turning data analysis into meaningful professional development.
"The application provides valuable insights through better information, which means better care and patient outcomes," says UBC CPD Clinical Director, Dr. Bruce Hobson. Learn about the benefits of HDC Discover.
HDC Academy
To help learners see where concepts show up in practice, HDC Academy connects directly to the HDC Discover application, providing easy access to practice data and the ability to compare results with regional and provincial benchmarks.
Courses are designed to be practical, clinically relevant and easy to navigate, with opportunities to reflect on existing practices.
Course modules
To mirror challenges faced in practice every day, the curriculum is designed with knowledge checks, reflective activities and BC-specific resources. Course topics include:
- Diabetes Prevention, Screening and Diagnosis
- Diabetes Management
- Pharmacological Management of Heart Failure
- Asthma Management and Medications
With HDC Academy, learners identify meaningful opportunities for practice improvement and turn insights from their own data into action. Courses are open to family physicians and nurse practitioners, and family physicians earn Mainpro+® Certified Assessment Activity credits at no cost.
Partnership
UBC CPD has partnered with HDC Discover at the Health Data Coalition (HDC) to design and develop a data-enabled CPD solution that meets CFPC certified assessment eligibility. HDC is a not-for-profit organization funded by theFamily Practice Services Committee.
