This is a short online continuing medical education course designed for new-to-practice internationally trained family physicians and specialists in British Columbia (BC). This course will introduce you to the ongoing opioid crisis in British Columbia and provide you with the knowledge and skills in opioid prescribing.

- Skills Gained
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe how prescription opioids are used in BC.
- Review strategies used to safely prescribe opioids.
- Describe a brief history of opioid use in medicine and the current state of BC’s toxic drug supply.
- List ways to identify patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), and recognize the knowledge, skills and attitude required to best support patients with OUD.
- Discuss the unique factors related to opioid use and safe prescribing in BC.

The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians. This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program (MOC) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by UBC CPD. You may claim a maximum of 1.00 hours (credits are automatically calculated). This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 1.0 Mainpro+® Certified Activity credits.
