What is the HOUSE OB Course?
The Hands-On Ultrasound Education Course (HOUSE OB) supports health care practitioners who provide obstetrical care to patients. You will improve your management of patients in their first and third trimester through hands-on learning sessions with rural physicians who are experienced in point-of-care ultrasound.
What will I learn?
Recognize third and first trimester ultrasound indications including
- Fetal presentation
- Fetal cardiac activity
- Amniotic fluid index (AFI)
- Whether multiple fetuses are present
- First trimester dating
What to expect?
The Hands-On Ultrasound Education Program delivers innovative content and on-site learning.
Part 1: Online
Learners complete online modules prior to on-site learning.
Part 2: Hands-on Workshop (Holiday Inn Vancouver-Centre (Broadway), 711 W. Broadway, Heather St, Vancouver, BC)
On-site learning, including practice using live models and simulation equipment.

As a result of attending this program, the participant will be able to:
- Use ultrasound in a safe manner
- Generate an optimal ultrasound image
- Demonstrate confidence in basic abdominal scanning of third trimester pregnancy for limited indications
- Recognize ultrasound features of a normal third trimester presentation, fluid and heartbeat
- Recognize ultrasound features for first trimester dating and viability
Hands-On Ultrasound Education is developed and delivered by the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Division of Rural Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in partnership with the Rural Coordination Centre of BC, with funding support from the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues.
The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians. This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 9.0 Mainpro+® Certified Activity credits. Each physician should claim only those credits accrued through participation in the activity.
