Introduction to WorkSafeBC & ICBC
This is a short online continuing medical education course designed for family physicians and specialists in British Columbia (BC).
This course is made up of 2 sections:
- Introduction to WorkSafeBC
Introduction to ICBC
Introduction to WorkSafeBC has 5 lessons, one of which is optional:
- History and Function of WorkSafeBC
- Claims Process/Medical Care
- How to Fill Out Forms
- Work Disability Prevention
Special Topics of Interest (optional)
Introduction to ICBC has 4 lessons:
- Background
- Management of Injury Claims
- Additional Reports for ICBC
- Court Attendance, Payments, Benefits and Disputes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
WorkSafeBC
- Integrate information on the function and history of WorkSafeBC into practice.
- Use information on the claims process to support patients with a WorkSafeBC claim.
- Recognize your own coverage status with WorkSafeBC as a physician and whether you need to register as an employer with WorkSafeBC.
- Identify unique services through WorkSafeBC.
- Recall how to complete forms for WorkSafeBC.
- Identify the potential readers of medical information that a physician provides.
- Relate information that can be helpful not only to the clinical care of patients, but also to assist with timely decision making for your patient’s claim as well as safe return to work planning for your patient.
- Demonstrate your health advocacy role regarding work and health.
- Apply key occupational medical concepts to prevent needless workplace disability.
- Apply learning to special topics (mental health claims, occupational diseases, occupational exposures).
ICBC
- Recognize the basic functions of ICBC.
- Describe how patients injured in motor vehicle accidents can access medical care.
- Describe what happens when patients need to see specialists for injuries from motor vehicle accidents.
- Identify how patients can access additional health services under Medical Services Plan (MSP) and what options exist outside of MSP.
- Determine how to bill for ICBC services.
- Describe the role of a physician in the dispute process between patients and ICBC.

The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians. This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program (MOC) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by UBC CPD. You may claim a maximum of 1.50 hours (credits are automatically calculated). This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 1.5 Mainpro+® Certified Activity credits. Each physician should claim only those credits accrued through participation in the activity.
