Midwifery Hormonal Contraception Course

Overview

This course meets the requirements of the BCCNM's Framework for Midwife Certification in Midwifery Hormonal Contraceptive Therapy and has been approved by the BCCNM board. Midwives who successfully complete this course are eligible for BCCNM issued specialized practice in this competency area.

Outline

This course is divided into nine lessons:

  1. Introduction
  2. Intrauterine Contraceptives 
  3. Implant
  4. DMPA
  5. Combined Oral Contraceptive
  6. Transdermal Contraceptive Patch (Patch)
  7. Vaginal Contraceptive Ring
  8. Progestin Only Pills
  9. Emergency Contraception
Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply assessment criteria for identifying appropriate contraceptive therapies.
  • Complete a comprehensive sexual health history.
  • Recognize indications, contraindications, pharmacologic action and potential side effects of intrauterine, injection, combinedhormonal, progestin-only, and emergency contraceptives.
  • Include cultural considerations and social determinants of health in any assessment.
  • Prescribe appropriate contraceptive options for individual clients.
  • Counsel clients on relevant information, instructions, and cautions for the use of contraceptives.
  • Recognize adverse effects of contraceptives and indications for discontinuation and/or referral to another medical professional.
