Opioid Prescribing in the Context of Toxic Drug Supply: Navigating Risks and Ensuring Patient Safety
This is a short online continuing medical education course designed for new-to-practice internationally trained family physicians and specialists in British Columbia (BC). This course will introduce you to the ongoing opioid crisis in British Columbia and provide you with the knowledge and skills in opioid prescribing.
The course is divided into four modules, Take-Home Resources, Discussion Board, and Ask An Expert Portal. The four modules are divided into the following topics:
- Prescription Opioids in BC
- Safe Prescribing of Opioids
- Opioid Use in Canada & the Toxic Drug Supply
- Harmful Opioid Use and Opioid Use Disorder
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe how prescription opioids are used in BC.
- Review strategies used to safely prescribe opioids.
- Describe a brief history of opioid use in medicine and the current state of BC’s toxic drug supply.
- List ways to identify patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), and recognize the knowledge, skills and attitude required to best support patients with OUD.
- Discuss the unique factors related to opioid use and safe prescribing in BC.
