Primary Care Procedural Skills: Hands-On Intensive Training Day
As the demand for accessible, comprehensive primary care continues to grow, health professionals working in primary care are increasingly expected to diagnose, manage and perform a range of office-based procedures. Developing strong primary care procedural skills can support timely assessment and management of commonly encountered conditions while helping reduce wait times for specialty care.
Developed by the Nurse Practitioner CPD program, this intensive one-day training is designed to strengthen the procedural knowledge, confidence and clinical competence of primary care providers through a combination of focused didactic teaching and hands-on practice. Participants will learn evidence-informed approaches to patient assessment, procedural decision-making, technical skills, and follow-up care for commonly encountered outpatient conditions.
Led by experienced clinical faculty, the program combines concise lectures, live demonstrations and supervised skills stations to create a practical and highly interactive learning experience. Participants will have the opportunity to practise procedures in a supportive environment while receiving individualized feedback to help translate learning into clinical practice.

By building confidence and competence in common outpatient procedures, participants will be better equipped to provide more complete care within the primary care setting.
The workshop will provide training in six high-value primary care procedural skills:
- Suturing and biopsy
- Dermoscopy for the assessment of cancerous lesions and benign growths
- Knee assessment and examination
- Intra-articular knee injections
- Trigger finger injections
- Toenail wedge resection for ingrown toenails
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Perform common primary care outpatient procedures using current evidence-informed techniques and safety standards.
- Assess patients for the indications, contraindications, risks, and follow-up requirements of common procedures.
- Manage common complications and urgent situations associated with outpatient primary care procedures.
- Develop an appropriate initial management or referral plan based on examination findings.
- Evaluate personal procedural competence and identify ongoing learning needs related to outpatient primary care procedures.
