Strengthening Kangaroo Care for Preterm Infants in British Columbia
Are you aware that Kangaroo Care has been shown to improve preterm infant growth and development with physiologic and immunologic benefits? Learn more about Kangaroo Care as a standard of care for preterm infants and parent-infant skin-to-skin contact.
This course is divided into four lessons:
- Introduction to Kangaroo Care
- The Evidence for Kangaroo Care
- How to Safely Practice Kangaroo Care
- Strengthening Kangaroo Care in NICUs
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the effects of early maternal-infant separation.
- Describe how the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) environment and experience of being born early can be sources of stress for preterm infants.
- Describe the importance of Kangaroo Care for the preterm infant and their family.
- Describe how to safely practice Kangaroo Care with all preterm infants in the hospital setting.
- Learn how to educate, support, and mentor parents to hold their infant in Kangaroo Care.
- Apply and strengthen Kangaroo Care in your hospital by employing steps to success.
- Identify ways to guide healthcare providers to safely support families to practice Kangaroo Care.
