Organization story - Rural Health Week - Dr. Gordon Horner

Meet: Dr. Gordon Horner

Title: Medical Lead

Portfolio: Rural

Describe what you do and what programs you work on:

I am the Medical Lead for Rural Rounds and the Rural-Focused Series programs at Rural CPD — a suite of virtual learning opportunities developed and led by rural physicians, for rural physicians.

Which partners do you work with most closely?

We work closely with the Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCbc).

Who does your work impact?

Our programs support fellow rural and remote practitioners across the province, and sometimes beyond.

In what ways does this work impact the health community, health-care system, or well-being of the target audience?

Our work builds a sense of community for what can sometimes be an isolating job, on top of shared and practical learning.

We provide high-quality care, despite the challenges of rural practice, like geography and team size. Our ability to create a rural safety net and sense of collegiality helps support learners and presenters.

What do you think are the new opportunities (trends) affecting your work?

We aim to explore deep dives into topics suggested by rural providers, such as critical care — and continue to grow beyond didactic sessions to build a community of learners who feel connected and can learn together.
