What is the HOUSE OB Course?
The Hands-On Ultrasound Education Obstetrics Course (HOUSE OB) supports rural health care practitioners who provide obstetrical care to patients. You will improve your management of patients in their first and third trimester through hands-on learning sessions with rural physicians who are experienced in point-of-care ultrasound.
HOUSE OB Learning Objectives:
- Describe the role of ultrasound as an adjunctive tool to clinical exam and history;
- Use ultrasound in a safe manner;
- Manage the basic physics and instrumentation aspects of generating an optimal ultrasound image;
- Demonstrate confidence in basic trans-abdominal scanning of third trimester pregnancy for limited indications; and
- Recognize ultrasound features of a normal third trimester gestation.
Part 1: Online
Learners complete online modules prior to on-site learning.
Part 2: Hands-on Workshop
Learners complete on-site learning, including practicing scanning using live models and ultrasound equipment.

Hands-On Ultrasound Education is developed and delivered by the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Division of Rural Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in partnership with the Rural Coordination Centre of BC, with funding support from the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues.
The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians. This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 9.0 Mainpro+® Certified Activity credits. Each physician should claim only those credits accrued through participation in the activity.
