Orthopaedics for Primary Care Virtual Series

Family physicians and nurse practitioners are often the first point of contact for patients presenting with musculoskeletal concerns. Many common orthopaedic conditions can be effectively assessed and managed within the primary care setting, reducing unnecessary specialist referrals and improving timely access to care.  Each session will begin with an orthopaedic specialist who will review key clinical essentials, evidence-informed management approaches, and important red flags that warrant specialist referral. A family physician or nurse practitioner will then discuss real-world challenges, barriers to care, and practical strategies for managing these patients in the primary care setting. The session will conclude with an interactive case-based discussion featuring both presenters, incorporating audience-submitted questions and clinical scenarios. Participants will also receive a practical toolkit with assessment, management, and referral resources that can be immediately applied in practice.

Overall Learning Objectives

By the end of the series, participants will be better equipped to:
•    Recognize common musculoskeletal conditions that can be managed in primary care.
•    Identify red flags requiring urgent investigation or specialist referral.
•    Apply practical assessment and treatment strategies within the primary care setting.
•    Navigate common barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
•    Utilize evidence-informed tools and resources to support patient care.
