Autism and Neurodiversity in Primary Care (ASD) - Management Module
This course is the second in a two-part series developed to support primary care providers in offering ongoing, inclusive care to autistic and neurodivergent patients of all ages. If you’ve already completed the first course, Autism and Neurodiversity in Primary Care – Recognize and Refer, you’ll now build on that foundation to deepen your understanding and enhance your clinical practice.
UBC CPD and the UBC Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Collaboration in Autism (CIRCA) have partnered to create this practical online module featuring engaging videos, real-world scenarios, and point-of-care tools you can use in your daily practice.
This course focuses on the management of common clinical issues, co-occurring conditions, and proactive care strategies for autistic individuals from childhood through adulthood. You'll also learn how to create an inclusive environment that supports effective and respectful interactions in your clinical setting.
Completion of the first course is not required but is highly recommended to get the most out of this module.

- Creating an Inclusive Medical Environment
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe current best practice interventions to support autistic individuals across the age ranges (preschool, school age, adolescents, and adults).
- Utilize Complementary and Alternative Treatments (CAT) in order to effectively advise and guide patients to better understand what may or may not work for each individual.
- Identify public and community-based services available to autistic individuals in BC.
- Describe the common co-occurring conditions typically associated with autism and their impact.
- Recognize unusual and distressed behaviour and describe the non-pharmacological and pharmacological options to care.
- Define preventative and proactive care strategies; what to monitor; and etiological testing and treatment options for associated medical conditions.
- Create an inclusive medical environment.
