Implants and IUDs: Comparing and Inserting Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC)
Join us in person on November 21, 2026 at UBC Robson Square in Vancouver, BC for the Implants and IUDs: Comparing and Inserting Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) workshops. Explore the current contraceptive landscape, the unmet needs in contraception, and gain insights into the benefits and risks of various contraceptive options in Canada.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the contraceptive landscape and unmet needs for contraception in Canada
- Compare the benefits and risks of the etonogestrel subdermal implant and intrauterine contraception
- Apply current best practices for inserting IUDs and troubleshooting difficult insertions
- Describe and demonstrate evidence-based techniques for inserting, localizing, and removing the etonogestrel subdermal implants
Part 1: Lecture and Q&A (2 hours)
You will receive the pre-recorded lecture in advance of the workshop date. In-person Q&A begins at 9:00 AM PCT and you must attend to obtain credits.
Participants must review the recorded lecture and attend the live sessions in order to obtain Mainpro+ credits.
Part 2: Hands-on Workshops (2 hours each)

| Katie Kessler, MD, CCFP, FCFP Dr. Kessler is a family physician who has been working in the Northwest Territories since 2009 and more recently joined the team at Willow Reproductive Health Centre in 2024. Her clinical practice is currently focused on Hospitalist and reproductive health services. She is the Deputy Territorial Medical Director for the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority and the current NWT representative on the CMA Board of Directors. |
| Alexa Lindley, MD, MPH Dr. Lindley (she/her) is a family physician and Clinical Assistant Professor at UBC. During her residency in Family and Community Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, she completed an area of focus in reproductive health, including contraception and abortion care. She has continued providing reproductive health care in a variety of practice settings over the past decade, currently at Willow Reproductive Health Centre in Vancouver. She also practices general family medicine at REACH Community Health Centre in Vancouver. |
