Midwifery STI Screening & Treatment Course
This course meets the requirements of the BCCNM's Framework for Midwife Certification in Sexually Transmitted Infections Management and has been approved by the BCCNM board. Midwives who successfully complete this course are eligible for BCCNM issued specialized practice in this competency area.
This course is divided into ten lessons:
- Introduction
- Identifying & Managing STIs
- Foundations of Testing Methods
- Chlamydia trachomatis (CT)
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae/gonorrhea (GC)
- Trichomoniasis
- Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
- Genital Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
- Venereal Syphilis
- Mycoplasma Genitalium
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe key components of a sensitive and comprehensive sexual health history.
- Identify appropriate laboratory or point of care tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and bacterial vaginosis (BV).
- Identify laboratory and empirical criteria for the diagnosis of chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis , herpes symplex virus, syphilis, mycoplasma genitalium and bacterial vaginosis.
- Describe the indications, contraindications, mechanism of action and side effects of medications used to treat chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, herpes symplex virus, and bacterial vaginosis.
- Counsel people on the prescribed course of treatment and follow-up plans for STIS, including side effects and adverse events.
- Identify adverse reactions and determine when it is appropriate to discontinue a medication and / or refer to another health care practitioner.
