Security in Low Doses: Safeguarding Patient Information in Private Practice

Overview

With expanding access to Provincial eHealth viewers such as CareConnect or Unified Clinical Information (UCI), private practice medical clinics in British Columbia are expected to implement appropriate security practices to ensure private patient information and the medical practice are protected. This introductory course supports medical professionals to gain practical knowledge and skills in protecting patient information security in their practice.

Outline

This course is divided into four lessons:

  • "More Than Just Formalities" - Learn how to create a culture of security
  • "All Hands on Deck!" - Learn how to train your clinical staff
  • "Keep It Secret & Keep It Safe" - Learn how to ensure the privacy of patient information
  • "The Game Is Afoot" - Learn how to limit the risk of a cyberattack
Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognize and evaluate day-to-day security threats that might lead to breaches of private patient information.
  • Describe roles and responsibilities of staff members in creating a culture of security in private practice clinic settings.
  • Describe important practices to control access to patient information.
  • Describe minimum technology requirements for risk mitigation.

This course focuses on patient information security and complements best practices in patient information privacy.
