Surgical First Assist in Obstetrics Online Learning
This online course may be taken by anyone with interest in orientation to the operating room for obstetrics, and is the pre-learning for the Surgical First Assist in Obstetrics workshop. It was developed to provide training in a Canadian context for entry level skills for the surgical assistant with a focus on obstetrics. It is appropriate for Registered Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, Family Physicians, Physician Assistants, Residents and Nurses.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the roles, responsibilities and scopes of practice of the health professionals involved in Cesarean birth.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill of the principles of patient safety in the operating room.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in surgical aseptic technique, patient positioning, tissue and instrument handling, suturing and wound closure during Cesarean birth.
If you are a currently enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences Midwifery Graduate Program at McMaster University at time of registration, completion and grades may be shared with McMaster University to fulfill program requirements.
