Overview of perinatal depression and anxiety, including common risk factors, screening, treatment approaches, and treatment planning. Through evidence based material, quizzes, and interactive video vignettes learners will gain an understanding of the importance of routinely screening for perinatal depression and anxiety and become more comfortable with the steps to doing so.

Outline

The course is divided into 5 modules:

  1. Background, Risk Factors and Epidemiology
  2. Screening and Diagnosis
  3. Treatment – Self Care, Psychotherapy in Pregnancy and Postpartum
  4. Treatment – Medications in Pregnancy and during Breast/Chestfeeding
  5. Identified Risks/Concerns and Practical Perinatal Care Plans
Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define relational, person-centred, family-centred, trauma informed and culturally safe approaches to care.
  • Recognize approaches that can prevent or reduce the risk and severity of depression and anxiety in the perinatal period.
  • Describe the risk factors, screening and impact of depression and anxiety in the perinatal period.
  • Define the approach to treating depression and anxiety in pregnancy using BC Best Practice Guidelines 2014.
  • Describe pharmacological treatment for perinatal depression and anxiety and considerations for the mother or birthing parent, fetus and breastfeeding or chestfeeding infant.
  • Develop a Perinatal Mental Health Care Plan with the person seeking care.
    Identify available resources in your community.
