Addiction Care and Treatment Online Course
The Addiction Care and Treatment Online Course (ACTOC) is a comprehensive 20-module online course for health care providers who diagnose and treat patients with substance use disorders using evidence-based treatments along a continuum of care.
Although this course is targeted towards health care providers, it is open to the general public. Anyone interested in learning about substance use disorders is encouraged to register for this course.
The Addiction Care and Treatment Online Course can be divided into two sets of modules or educational streams:
- Addiction Care and Treatment Online Certificate (all core modules plus optional nursing modules), and
- Substance Use and Addiction Nursing Certificate (with nursing specific content only).

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Incorporate screening, diagnosis, and brief intervention and referral to treatment for substance use disorders in clinical practice
- Select the appropriate pharmacological and psychosocial treatment interventions based on the best evidence as well as individual patient needs, circumstances, and preferences
- Provide safe and effective treatment to patients and their families throughout the induction, maintenance, and/or discontinuation process across the continuum of care for substance use disorders
- Set treatment goals, monitoring and evaluating progress, and providing patient-centred support across the continuum of care for substance use disorders
- Appreciate the complexity of substance use disorders, diversity of care, and providing informed referrals to evidence-based support services
- Promote recovery, safety, wellness, and harm reduction to improve patient care and support for those with substance use disorders
- Implement strategies for safer prescribing practices for medications with abuse/diversion potential (i.e., opioids for analgesia, benzodiazepines)

The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians. The CNA Accreditation Program upholds standards of quality for continuing professional development for nurses in Canada. This self-assessment learning activity has been accredited for up to 5.0 CNA credits.
