Midwifery Induction and Augmentation of Labour
This self-learning online course will provide Registered Midwives with the requisite knowledge and skills to safely prescribe and manage induction or augmentation of labour as outlined in the BCCNM Framework for Midwifery Certification for Induction and Augmentation of Labour in Hospital. It is intended for Registered Midwives only. The self-learning online course is the first of two components required by BCCNM to obtain specialized practice certification in prescribing, ordering, administering and managing induction and augmentation of labour in hospital.
Self-Learning Online Course
- Provides IOL theory and pre-learning for the in-person preceptorship
- Learners must receive at least 80% on the final examination in order to pass this component of the certification process and receive a certificate of completion. (Note: chapter exercises and quizzes do not count towards your final grade.)
Competency-based Skills Assessment
- Following the completion of the online course, midwives must complete a competency based skills assessment that demonstrates appropriate skills in managing pharmacological induction/augmentation of labour by a supervisor (obstetrician, family physician, or midwife who is already certified and privileged in this area of specialized practice).
At the end of the overview section: This course meets the requirements of the BCCNM's Framework for Midwifery Certification for Induction and Augmentation of Labour in Hospital and has been approved by the BCCNM board. Midwives who successfully complete this course are eligible for BCCNM issued specialized practice in this competency area.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of mechanical and pharmacological cervical ripening, induction, and augmentation of labour including:
- The criteria for safe initiation of induction and augmentation of labour including:
- Indications
- Appropriate client selection criteria
- Appropriate choice of agent
- The advantages, disadvantages, risks and benefits of the different methods of induction and augmentation of labour and
- Appropriate client counseling for each method.
- The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of prostaglandins and oxytocin including:
- Dosing
- Concentration
- Frequency/rate
- Route
- Precautions
- For oxytocin; rationale for concurrent IV solutions
- The criteria for safe initiation of induction and augmentation of labour including:
- Describe the national and community standards and guidelines for cervical ripening, induction and augmentation methods.
- Identify the appropriate fetal surveillance to be used with cervical ripening, induction and augmentation of labour.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to adverse effects of uterotonic medication (e.g. atypical and abnormal fetal heart rate pattern and uterine tachysystole).
- Describe management of pharmacological cervical ripening, induction/augmentation of labour including:
- Safe client screening and selection;
- Providing informed choice and informed consent;
- Ordering pharmacological induction or augmentation agents in line with national guidelines and community standards and in the context of the range of clinical situations;
- Insertion techniques for cervical ripening agent;
- Identifying the appropriate care and monitoring of client and fetus during an cervical ripening, induction and augmentation;
- Identifying problems and implementing appropriate interventions, including intra-uterine resuscitation and initiating appropriate physician consultation and transfer of care when required; and
- Organizing documentation of assessment and care that is complete, concise, and contemporaneous including admission and history, orders for induction and augmentation, and progress notes related to induction or augment.
