Midwifery Physiological Breech Birth

Overview

In recent years, several publications have reported good vaginal breech birth outcomes for select populations in the care of a skilled breech birth team. The primary objective of this course is to support knowledge and skill development so that primary care attendants may develop competency to support breech birth.   

This course is currently under development and will be published by Fall 2026. An accompanying in-person workshop is also under development. Join the waiting list to be notified of availability. 

Outline

This course is divided into four lessons:

  1. Introduction to breech birth
  2. Characteristics of 'normal breech birth'
  3. Assessment and breech birth delivery
  4. Proficiency and implementation
Learning objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Have an understanding of the evidence and guidance for supporting breech birth in Canada
  • Define physiological breech birth and identify different types of breech presentations
  • Describe relevant breech birth research related to outcomes and approaches
  • Outline the mechanisms and principles of physiological breech birth
  • Apply the Physiological Breech Birth Algorithm
  • Integrate a standardized Breech Birth Documentation Tool
  • Describe and demonstrate manual interventions to relieve obstruction that occur during breech birth
  • Discuss strategies for developing and sustaining local breech birth expertise
  • Outline the information needed to support informed decision-making regarding mode of breech birth
