Coaching for Excellence in the Operating Room
Overview
Welcome to the UBC CPD Coaching for Excellence in the Operating Room Program! This program is now closed. It was funded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
This clinical coaching program for specialist physicians (surgeons and anesthesiologists) supported physicians to participate in peer-to-peer coaching interactions to enhance their practice in the operating room by pairing physician coachees with peer coaches.
Coaches and coachees engaged in learner-driven professional development based on coachees’ learning needs. Participants in this program had the opportunity to form practical and meaningful professional relationships.
Coachees set their goals in collaboration with their coach. The coach either attended a surgery or provided feedback on an area of work the coachee needed support with. The pair debriefed and set goals/next steps in line with the coachee's unique learning needs.
This program was for specialists working in surgery sub-specialties and anesthesiology, from three different Vancouver sites (St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, BC Women’s Hospital/BC Children’s Hospital).
Skills Gained
At the end of the coaching program, participants (coachees) will be able to demonstrate growth as surgeon by:
- Reflecting on and integrating continual performance enhancement into practice
- Improving technical or non-technical skills, customized by you to meet your personal goals
- Developing collaboration skills as a co-learner with a peer colleague

Eligibility
- Specialist surgeon or anesthesiologist looking for peer support to improve technical or non-technical skills
- Self-motivated and willing to reflect on and improve practice with the support of a peer coach
- Willing to spend up to 6.0 hours participating in the program and have a coach observe a procedure and provide feedback
- Privileges at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital or BC Women’s and Children’s Hospital

- Receive up to 1.5 hours of MOC Section 1 credits for your participation in the coach training session
- Receive remuneration at the hourly sessional rate of $158.97 for up to five (5) hours
Eligibility
- Specialist surgeon or anesthesiologist looking to support a peer in their technical or non-technical skills
- Supportive of colleagues’ learning and want to give back to the medical community
- Willing to spend up to 6.5 hours participating in the program (attend a 1.5 hr coach training session and observe a colleague perform a procedure and give feedback up to 5 hr)
- Privileges at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital or BC Women’s and Children’s Hospital
