Providing Culturally Safe Care for Two-Spirit and Gender-Diverse Indigenous Peoples
This webinar invites healthcare professionals to explore how cultural safety and Indigenous perspectives on gender diversity can inform more respectful and affirming care for Two-Spirit and gender-diverse Indigenous Peoples. Through an Indigenous cultural safety lens, the session examines how colonial systems have shaped experiences of gender, identity, belonging, and healthcare, while recognizing that teachings, identities, languages, and practices are distinct across Indigenous Nations and communities.
Grounded in reflection, practical examples, and relationship-centered approaches to care, the session emphasizes cultural safety as an ongoing practice that extends beyond individual awareness to the environments, relationships, and systems that influence patient experiences. Participants will leave with practical insights and actions they can begin integrating into their healthcare settings to support dignity, self-determination, belonging, and respect for Two-Spirit and gender-diverse Indigenous Peoples.
By participating in this learning activity, you will be able to:
- Describe foundational concepts related to Two-Spirit identity and gender diversity while recognizing the diversity of Indigenous cultural teachings, identities, and practices.
- Recognize how colonialism, healthcare systems, and intersecting forms of discrimination can influence healthcare experiences for Two-Spirit and gender-diverse Indigenous Peoples.
- Identify culturally safer and more relational approaches that support dignity, belonging, self-determination, and respectful care.
- Apply practical actions within their own role or healthcare setting to strengthen culturally safer care for Two-Spirit and gender-diverse Indigenous Peoples.
