Emergency Contraception Update

Overview

This accredited online continuing medical education course equips health-care providers with the knowledge and skills to offer comprehensive, evidence-based emergency contraception (EC) care. Through interactive case studies and up-to-date clinical guidance, participants will explore the full range of oral EC agents and intrauterine devices (IUDs/IUCs), and gain practical tools to support inclusive, patient-centered counselling.

Designed for family physicians, pharmacists, nurses, midwives, specialists, and other health professionals who provide care to patients at risk of pregnancy, this 75-minute self-paced course aims to reduce unintended pregnancies and improve reproductive health outcomes.

The course is divided into 5 lessons:

  • Lesson 3: IUD Emergency Contraception
  • Lesson 4: Comparison of EC Options
  • Lesson 5: Case Scenarios
     
Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the various emergency contraception (EC) options available 
  • Compare the mechanism of action of oral EC agents and copper and levonorgesteral intrauterine devices (IUDs) 
  • Evaluate the comparative effectiveness of EC methods 
  • Counsel patients about their EC options using evidence-informed, inclusive language 
  • Identify appropriate candidates for an IUD for EC

Accreditation

The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians. This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program (MOC) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by UBC CPD.
