Breast/chestfeeding is important for the lifelong health and wellbeing of both parent and baby. As a care provider you have an important influence on a parent's infant feeding decisions. - The background of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and its relevance to family physicians.
- The importance of breast/chestfeeding and risks associated with non-human milk substitute.
- The identification and management of common breast/chestfeeding challenges.
- Specific resources and services for breast/chestfeeding support and medical management, including when and where to refer.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- To recognize the important influence of the community-based family physician on parent’s infant feeding choices, and to become a family physician advocate for breast/chestfeeding.
- To describe the two major components of the Baby-Friendly Initiative in relation to family physicians.
- To be able to explain the key risks of non-human milk substitute use to parents of newborns and infants.
- To be able to identify and manage common breast/chestfeeding problems.
- To identify and make use of resources for breast/chestfeeding support and medical management, including when and where to refer patients for further assistance with breast/chestfeeding.

The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians. This one- credit-per-hour Assessment program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 1.50 Mainpro+® credits. Each physician should claim only those credits accrued through participation in the activity.
