Each year, the UBC Faculty of Medicine celebrates outstanding contributions to Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development (CME/CPD). In 2026, we recognize two recipients for their innovative excellence and long-term commitment to transform medical education across British Columbia.  

Award for Innovation in CME/CPD

Recognizes outstanding innovation and/or creativity with original work in the area of CME/CPD programming.  

Recipient: Stabilization Essentials in Pediatrics (StEP) program

Congratulations to the Stabilization Essentials in Pediatrics (StEP) program for their innovative approach to transform pediatric critical care capacity across British Columbia.  

By bringing education directly to communities, StEP promotes equity, capacity building and improved outcomes for critically ill children across urban, rural and remote communities throughout the province.

Developed through extensive consultation with front-line health-care teams and guided by a multidisciplinary provincial advisory committee, StEP combines regional customization, interdisciplinary education, simulation-based learning and a "train-the-trainer" model to address local needs.

Over three years, StEP reached 270 health-care providers across all five regional health authorities—the significance of this program's impact is reflected in participant feedback:  

  • over 90% state it would influence their clinical practice and that they would recommend the course to colleagues
  • more than 60% reported a direct impact on patient care in the months following participation.

The team shares, "we are honoured to receive this award. StEP has been built through collaboration with health-care teams across BC, and this recognition belongs to everyone who has shared their expertise, enthusiasm and commitment to improving care for critically ill children."

Award for Distinguished Service in CME/CPD

Recognizes substantial long-term contributions to Continuing Professional Development/Continuing Medical Education in the Faculty of Medicine. 

Recipients: Dr. Brenna Lynn, Dr. Randall F. White

Dr. Brenna Lynn

As former Executive Director and Associate Dean at UBC Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Dr. Brenna Lynn played a pivotal role in advancing the growth, innovation, scholarship and national reputation of UBC CPD within the UBC Faculty of Medicine and across British Columbia and Canada. Her leadership was instrumental in the development and sustained success of multiple national award-winning and sustained CPD programs, such as CME on the Run, the BC Physician Integration Program (BC-PIP) and the Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP).

“Over the course of my career in CPD, I have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary colleagues, educators, clinicians and learners who share a commitment to improving health care through lifelong learning,” says Dr. Lynn. “The programs and scholarship we created were never the work of one person—they are the result of a remarkable team and a community united by a shared commitment to making a difference.”

As former Chair of the national Standing Committee on Continuing Professional Development (SCCPD) Research Subcommittee and a longstanding member of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Research Committee and the CPD Research Advisory Council, Dr. Lynn also made significant contributions to advance CPD scholarship and research. Her leadership, collaboration and commitment to evidence-informed practice have helped shape the future of CPD.

Dr. Randall F. White

Dr. Randall F. White is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in the UBC Department of Psychiatry, and he became Division Head for Adult Psychiatry and Mental Health Services in 2023. He has contributed extensively to medical education activities, led transformative quality improvement projects, presented numerous educational rounds in BC hospitals, organized regional events and co-chaired the annual Pacific Psychopharmacology Conference (PPPC), now in its 20th year.

Dr. White shares, “It’s rewarding to help my colleagues and peers meet their learning goals, and I’m looking forward to assuming a national leadership role later this year as chairperson of the Canadian Psychiatric Association CPD committee.”

As Clinical Director for the BC Psychosis Program at UBC Hospital and former Medical Director for Vancouver Community Mental Health and Substance Use Services, Dr. White's clinical and research interests lie in the management of treatment-resistant psychotic disorders.
