Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP)
UBC Rural CPD’s Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP) is designed to support the diverse needs of physicians, locums, and residents practicing in rural British Columbia. CAMP connects you with experienced peer coaches and mentors to strengthen your clinical and professional skills, build confidence, and foster meaningful connections within rural medical communities.
How it works
CAMP offers flexible, personalized coaching and mentoring tailored to your goals and practice context. Coaches and mentors can support you virtually, in your community, or at a higher‑volume centre—whatever format works best for you.
You can meet with a coach or mentor to explore a wide range of topics, including:
- Transitioning into rural BC practice
- Emergency medicine
- Point‑of‑care ultrasound
- Long‑term care
- Airway management
- Internal medicine
- Balance, resilience, and well‑being
- And more, based on your learning needs

For Coaches/Mentors
- Compensation for coaching and mentoring time at the hourly rate of $176.18
CAMP eligibility requirements
Coaching and Mentoring Program (CAMP) is available to:
- Fully or provisionally licensed physicians practicing in a rural British Columbia (BC) community as defined by the Rural Practice Subsidiary Agreement (RSA)
- Rural BC locum physician
- Resident physicians, committed to rural BC practice upon completion of residency
Registration is open to coaches/mentors who meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Fully or provisionally licensed physicians practicing in British Columbia, Canada
- Locum physician in BC
- In good standing
Information for Coaches/Mentors
Coach/Mentor time commitment
Up to 35 hours per coachee/mentee plus an optional 14 hours of skills development.
We encourage pairs to discuss expectations for the relationship early on, including frequency of meetings, length of the relationship, types of coaching/mentoring activities, and ways of contacting each other.
If you are unable to commit to 35 hours over nine months or longer, please let us know and we would be happy to discuss your availability further.
Coach/Mentor payment
Coaches/mentors are paid an hourly rate of $176.18 for time spent working with their coachee(s)/mentee(s). We ask that you keep a log of your calls to ensure accurate remuneration.
Coach/Mentor skill development
Coaches/mentors have the opportunity to learn and develop key coaching and mentoring skills through Coach/Mentor Skill Development sessions. In each session, experienced physician coaches virtually lead a short lesson, and then provide an interactive opportunity to practice coaching/mentoring skills with your peers. Sign up to gain confidence, ask questions, share your experience, and connect with other coaches/mentors.
The project was developed and is operated by the UBC Faculty of Medicine's Division of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in partnership with the Rural Coordination Centre of BC. Funding for CAMP was provided by the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues, a joint committee of the Doctors of BC and BC Ministry of Health.

Rural Obstetrical and Maternity Sustainability Program (ROAM-SP) supports BC obstetrical and maternity teams, including family physicians, midwives, obstetricians and nurses.

The Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Committee (CACME) to provide CPD credits for physicians.
This activity is an Accredited Group Learning (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program (MOC) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by UBC CPD. Coachees/Mentees may claim a maximum of 35.00 hours.
This one-credit-per-hour Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 1.00 Mainpro+® credits. Each physician should claim only those credits accrued through participation in the activity.
