Somatic Symptom Disorder and Functional Neurological Disorder
While most of us experience somatization, some will experience physical manifestations of emotional distress that worsen and persist over time, causing profound suffering.
Somatization can become a disorder when the symptom(s) cause(s) sufficient distress to warrant clinical intervention and/or disability in an individual’s life. Recognizing these disorders early can lead to better management strategies, reduce patient distress, and enhance overall health outcomes.
This short online module provides foundational information on the process of somatization, the specific diagnoses Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), and an approach to assessment and treatment.
The course is divided into 6 modules, Take-Home Resources, Discussion Board, and Ask An Expert Portal. The 6 modules are divided into the following topics:
