Looking Beyond a Diagnosis: Major Depressive Disorder
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common and challenging conditions encountered in primary care. This self-paced online course equips family physicians and nurse practitioners with practical tools to recognize, diagnose, and manage MDD. Through four interactive modules, you’ll explore screening and assessment strategies, treatment planning, and the intersection of depression with chronic disease. This course builds on Looking Beyond a Diagnosis: Mental Health in Primary Care, and learners who have not yet completed that module are encouraged to do so first.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss the fundamental features of major depressive disorder (MDD)
- Select the appropriate investigations and screening tools for diagnosis of MDD
- Implement a management plan for MDD based on the MDD care pathway and develop a treatment plan based on what matters to the patient
- Describe the relationship between chronic disease and mental health disorders
- Perform an assessment for suicide risk and create a safety plan with patients
- Evaluate and recommend local and provincial resources, services, and coordination pathways
